The National Children’s Oral Health Foundation: America’s ToothFairy® (NCOHF) has taken the small, mythical character that children dream of and transformed her into a true superhero. Did you know that tooth decay is the #1 chronic childhood disease? In fact, millions of children are suffering in such pain, they are unable to eat, sleep and learn. While severe tooth decay is a growing problem, it is also treatable, curable, and preventable through basic education and proper oral hygiene practices. The NCOHF is dedicated to delivering comprehensive oral healthcare for underserved children. Providing preventive, restorative and educational oral health services to more than 600,000 children each year, the NCOHF: America’s ToothFairy® aims to eliminate pediatric oral disease and promote overall health and well-being for millions of children from vulnerable populations.

The National Children’s Oral Health Foundation: America’s ToothFairy® (NCOHF) is asking for your help in the fight against tooth decay. We’re hoping you can encourage your readers to learn more about taking part in good oral health practices with their children by signing up for the America’s Toothfairy Kids Club! I grew up going to a dentist all my life and later on found out that all the work that had been done was wrong. This dentist that did not  take care of my teeth the way he should have when it came to fillings and root canals. Thank GOD their are dentist out there that do their jobs the right way. So when I stop to think about all the corrective surgery I had to have when I saw a dentist my whole life…think about the kids who never get to go. WOW! Scary thought! A DAY IN THE SNOW WITH THE KIDS!

Playing with the kids in the snow!

Took the kids outside to try to build a snowman and we found that the snow was not good packing snow.  It was just good enough to get a few good snowballs which made everything more fun.

The kids made snow angels and we built a snow wall to keep the bad people out.  Please take time to get your kids out of the house into the fresh cold air.  They need the fresh air and  time with the family to help them grow up happy and healthy!

FIRST BIG SNOW IN MICHIGAN!

Shanda Bauman

Sledding with my Kids

So this winter has been very mild and I have been loving it. I love running to get groceries and not worrying about the snow. Well, we finally got hit big time with snow and the kids LOVE IT!

First thing Sat. morning Nevaeh ran in my bedroom and asked if we could go sledding as a family. I will admit that most times I hope Daddy takes the kids out in the cold while I stay in and blog. Not this time…I wanted some quality time with my family and I am so thankful I did. I forgot how much fun it is to slide down the hill. My kids had a blast and boy are they dare devils.

I totally love that we got spend the day at the sledding hill along with tons of other parents! The hill was totally packed and everyone was so friendly. At one point Paityn stopped in the middle of the hill climb and started crying…she was mad cause Korbyn went down the hill without her.  Another little boy who looked to be about 10 years old stopped and offered her his sled. What a sweatheart he was! I could tell his Mom was so proud of him!

Well, if you are thinking of taking your kids sledding..get out there and do it.

LANDS END OUTERWEAR FOR MOM!

I am one of the BIGGEST FANS of LANDS END! Lands End offers a ton of fabulous products and the coats are so warm. The down in the coats are by far the best quality of down you can buy. Living in Michigan is hard in the winter since I never want to leave my warm home. I have been wearing one of my coats for as long as I could until I pulled out my LANDS END coat. What the hell was I thinking….I have been freezing my ass off all this time in a fiber filled jacket when I could have been wearing this coat. SO MUCH WARMER!!! I love it and all my friends told me that they love it and want to get one also. So not only is it warm it is affordable!!

I also have matching gloves and a hat to keep me super  stylish!!  I get nervous wearing all white around my kids but I am so happy that I bought this color. I always buy black!  So I stepped out of my black shell and went for the white one!!

Baked Brie with Rosemary and Roasted Garlic

Baked Brie with Rosemary and Roasted Garlic

Baked Brie with Roasted Garlic and Sun-Dried Tomatoes
1 whole head garlic
1 sprig fresh rosemary
1 teaspoon olive oil
1 (12-ounce) round of brie cheese
3/4 cup sun-dried tomatoes packed in oil, drained and cut into thin strips
1/3 cup pine nuts
3 tablespoons finely shredded fresh basil
Crostini* or apple slices
Garnish: Sprigs of fresh basil or rosemary, imported green and black olives
Preheat oven to 375*F (190*C).
Cut off 1/4 inch of pointed end of head of garlic (save small pieces for another recipe). Place cut side up in a piece of aluminum foil. Place rosemary on top. Bring sides of foil up to make a deep bowl, but do not enclose garlic completely. Pour olive oil over top of garlic. Bake for 40-45 minutes in preheated oven. Cool.
** NOTE, If you want to skip roasting the garlic, you can just purchase a jar of roasted garlic and it works just the same.
Squeeze garlic so that the cloves pop out of their papery jackets. They should be creamy. Smash them and spread on top of brie (including some of the rosemary). Place brie in ovenproof dish. Top with tomatoes and pine nuts. Increase oven temperature to 400*F (205*C).
Bake brie until warm and softened, about 13 to 18 minutes. If topping is getting too browned, cover loosely with aluminum foil during last portion of baking.
Sprinkle slivers of fresh basil on top. Surround with crostini and/or apple slices. Garnish with sprigs of fresh herbs and, if using, drained imported olives. Provide a spreading knife.
Yield: 24 servings.
*Toasted slices of good bread that have been brushed with a little olive oil before toasting.
Notes:

1. If you can only find small, 4-ounce disks of brie, push 3 small wheels next to one

Iowa Speedway

Rusty and I finally got away for a weekend for the first time without kids. Yep, can you believe after 6 years we finally took a long weekend to spend time together. We were invited out to the Iowa Speedway on behalf of Iowa Corn. Neither of us had ever been to a race so we jumped at the chance to go. You will remember my posts from last year when we toured the farms of Iowa to learn more about corn! Being invited to the Iowa Cornucopia was a wonderful experience for me and I learned a ton. I met a ton of wonderful bloggers and farmers on this trip to Iowa! One of the best parts of going back to Iowa was getting to meet up with the friends I met on the first trip.

Miss Mommy Goggles herself!!!

We started our first day back with a dinner to reunite everyone with new friends and even met some new ones. The drinks were awesome too!!

Every was so friendly and dinner was really good also!

The next morning we headed off to the famers’ market despite the rainy weather! Even in the rain I found a ton of great things that I bought to bring home. One of which I was really excited about was the homemade chocolate peanut butter that got taken by security at the airport! PHOOEY!

The vegetables and fruit stands were gorgeous and full of stock.

After our shopping trip we headed off to the Iowa Speedway to enjoy the race with friends!

We checked in at the Media office and then toured the Speedway for a couple of hours.

Looking at all of the cars, talking to drivers and investigating everything was blast! This time hubby got to ride in the pace car before the race started! How awesome!!

Rusty and I at dinner!!!

LAURIE, TANYA AND I!!

The race was awesome we got to see all of the drivers before they started the race. We were right down on the track while they were all announced to the crowd! My favorite part was seeing all of the wonderful farmers up in the Iowa Corn Hospitality tents!!

It was a wonderful trip!!

Things I learned that you should know!!

How great the Farmers’ Market is..support your farmers!

FUN FOR KIDS!!

Food Bloggers Get Out On The Farm

ZimmCast 309Would you be surprised to know that many food bloggers aren’t real familiar with where the food they write about comes from? Probably not. Most people today do not understand how food is produced and have no real connection to the farm regardless of what kind of food or farm you’re talking about.

The Iowa Corn Growers have done something about this. Last week they hosted a group of “guest bloggers” to Iowa and I met them during Iowa Corn Indy 250 weekend activities. Pictured in the center is food blogger, Allison Loesch along with her husband on the right and Iowa Corn Promotion Board Chair, Dick Gallagher.

I know that many of you want to know how to reach out to and engage consumers more. How about reaching out to those very involved in social media on the consumer side? In this week’s program you will hear Mindy Willamson, Iowa Corn Growers, talk about the group they hosted and from Allison. I think you’ll find what they have to say interesting.

Hopefully they will join #FoodChat which is the Twitter conversation that takes place the third Tuesday of each month from 8-10pm, ET. All other Tuesday’s it is AgChat!

This week’s program ends with some music from Music Alley. It’s called “Food” by Deirdre Flint.

Chef Boyardee "Almost Homemade Recipes"

Most of my readers know that I work a full time job and run my blog part-time once my kiddos go to bed! Some nights I am so tired that it is hard to cook a good healthy meal from scratch! I was so excited to hear about Chef Boyardee and the new recipes that they came up with to help make dinner easier. These new recipes are “ALMOST HOMEMADE” and the great part is that they can be made in less than 30 minutes. I would love nothing better than to serve my kids fresh from the farm organic food every night. We live in the real world with real times schedules and picky eaters! Checking out their new site made my own creative juices start flowing! I love mixing ingredients to make a totally new dish that my family will enjoy! So if you are looking for an in-expensive meal that will feed the whole family then check out Chef Boyardees new recipe site and all the great recipes they have to offer. We listed our favorite two from their site below. Try them out tonight!!

The first recipe we chose to make was the Cheeseburger-roni! The kids looked at it as if I was serving them poison. Then I told them to try one bite and if they didn’t like it they would have to eat it. The all took a bite and as soon as Nevaeh was on board the other two followed with a “YUMMY!” The recipe below is exactly what we made and it was a breeze. We can give 5 thumbs up from our family!!

CHEESEBURGER-RONI

Ingredients

  • PAM® Original No-Stick Cooking Spray
  • 2 can (15 oz each) Chef Boyardee® Beefaroni®
  • 1 can (14.5 oz each) Hunt’s® Diced Tomatoes, drained
  • 1/4 cup Hunt’s® Tomato Ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped dill pickle
  • 1 tablespoon prepared yellow mustard
  • 1/4 cup shredded reduced fat Cheddar cheese
  • 1 hamburger bun with sesame seeds, torn into small pieces

Nutrition Information*

Serving Size 6 servings (1 cup each)

Directions

  1. Preheat broiler. Spray 10-inch oven-safe skillet with cooking spray; heat over medium-high heat.
  2. Add beefaroni, drained tomatoes, ketchup, pickle and mustard to skillet. Heat 5 minutes or until hot, stirring occasionally.
  3. Top with cheese. Lightly spray torn bun with cooking spray and place on top of cheese. Place skillet under broiler 2 to 3 minutes or until bun pieces are browned and crisp.

Cook’s Tips

No hamburger bun on hand for the topping? Two slices of bread may be substituted. And dill pickle relish could be substituted for the chopped dill pickle. The beefaroni mixture could be served in hamburger buns, topped with American cheese for ‘cheeseburger joes’. Get the kids involved with preparation by letting them add ingredients to the skillet and help stir the dish. They also could tear up the hamburger bun. To help give your family even more of the good stuff they need, you can use Whole Grain Beefaroni instead of Regular Beefaroni.

RAVIOLI LASAGNA

Ingredients

  • PAM® Original No-Stick Cooking Spray
  • 1 cup frozen loose cut leaf spinach
  • 2 can (15 oz each) Chef Boyardee® Beef Ravioli
  • 1 can (14.5 oz each) Hunt’s® Diced Tomatoes, drained well
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons dried Italian seasoning
  • 1 cup 1% low-fat cottage cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded Italian blend cheese

Nutrition Information*

Serving Size 6 servings (1 cup each)
Calories 240

View complete nutrition information

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Spray 8×8-inch glass baking dish with cooking spray. Place spinach in microwave-safe bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and microwave on HIGH 2 minutes; squeeze spinach dry.
  2. Combine ravioli, drained tomatoes and Italian seasoning in medium microwave-safe bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and microwave on HIGH 3 to 4 minutes or until mixture is hot. Combine cottage cheese, spinach and black pepper in small bowl.
  3. Place half of ravioli mixture in bottom of baking dish. Top with half of cottage cheese mixture and 1/2 cup shredded cheese. Repeat layers. Bake 15 minutes or until cheese is hot and bubbly.

Cook’s Tips

Involve the kids with the preparation. They can stir together the cottage cheese mixture and help layer the ingredients in the dish. Trying to please a picky eater? Substitute the spinach with another vegetable the family enjoys. You also could place all of the spinach mixture between the layers of ravioli or leave the spinach out completely.

Wii: Mystery Case Files: The Malgrave Incident!

So a few weekends ago we hosted a Wii Mystery party! We invited all of our friends and neighbors for a night of mystery. So we prepared for the weekend buying some snacks and drinks for the kids to enjoy. The kids were so excited that we decide to have a mashed potato bar along with a dessert bar with make your own sundae’s. For the fruit choice they chose a large watermelon that was juicy and red!
Here is what our invitations looked like!
<————————–

Our family usually plays the “Wii Party Games,” when we host a party but this time it was time for our guests to test their detective skills. They all knew they were invited to a Wii Mystery game day, all of our other Wii party nights have been successful so everyone was up for the challenge!

We started our party outside at a local park so that we could eat in the wonderful weather we had here in Michigan. The kids loved the watermelon since it was so sweet.
Soon it was too humid for all of our friends to sit outside. So we headed inside to start our adventure with our new Wii game “Mystery Case Files: The Malgrave Incident!” We were excited that the game offers a multi-player option so a bunch of us could play together

Clue cards, note pads and detective badges made our party even more interesting!

The Malgrave Incident

How far will one man go to save the love of his life?

The waters of Malgrave Island are legendary. The locals believe that soaking in the island’s baths will melt years from an aging body. This legend grew as tourists began flocking to the island to see for themselves. One such tourist was Winston Malgrave-a wealthy but sickly industrialist. With his vast wealth, Malgrave became the island’s curator, guiding the island through many years of prosperity. But then the island suddenly closed its doors to visitors, and no one has heard from Mr. Malgrave or the island’s residents since.

Now it seems that Mr. Malgrave is in need of assistance. He has reached out to you, the master detective of the famed Mystery Case Files Detective Agency. Mr. Malgrave delivered a registered post to you-and to you only. No one else here dared open it.

One can only wonder what’s inside that package and what Mr. Malgrave needs.

  • Engage in an interactive mystery designed for you
  • Challenge your friends in exciting multiplayer modes* or team up to solve the crime in co-op play
  • Use the Wii Remote controller to examine multi-layered hidden-object scenes

Our friends had a riot and it was a challenge trying to uncover the right clues at the right time. Everyone was jumping in to tell the next player what to do in each scene. We had such a good time and even the kids we chiming in to tell us about the different clues. I really enjoyed the games that have the hidden objects and you point and click through the adventure! I will tell you that this game can be slow at times and waiting for scenes to load can drive you nuts. When playing the hidden objects game you need to find approx. 12 items in each scene so you gather all of the clues. Once you have all the clues you need you can solve the different puzzles offered. Part of the game are hard to figure out on what the object of the that scene is..we found ourselves clicking on everything kind of fumbling around. Other than those few issues..the party was a blast and the kids loved the little note pads for writing down their clues!
